Shills and snipes

چکیده

Online auctions with a fixed end-time often experience a sharp increase in bidding towards the end despite using a proxy-bidding format. We provide a novel explanation of this phenomenon under private values. We study a correlated private values environment in which the seller bids in her own auction (shill bidding). Bidders selected randomly from some large set arrive randomly in an auction, then decide when to bid (possibly multiple times) over a continuous time interval. A submitted bid arrives over a continuous time interval according to some stochastic distribution. The auction is a continuous-time game where the set of players is not commonly known, a natural setting for online auctions. We show that there is a late-bidding equilibrium in which bids are delayed to the latest instance involving no sacrifice of probability of bid arrival, but shill bids fail to arrive with positive probability, and in this sense optimal late bidding serves to snipe the shill bids. We show conditions under which the equilibrium outcome is unique. Our results suggest that under private values, the case against shill-bidding might be weak. JEL CLASSIFICATION: D44

Swarm intelligence inspired shills and the evolution of cooperation

Many hostile scenarios exist in real-life situations, where cooperation is disfavored and the collective behavior needs intervention for system efficiency improvement. Towards this end, the framework of soft control provides a powerful tool by introducing controllable agents called shills, who are allowed to follow well-designed updating rules for varying missions. Inspired by swarm intelligenc...

How does the interaction radius affect the performance of intervention on collective behavior?

The interaction radius r plays an important role in the collective behavior of many multi-agent systems because it defines the interaction network among agents. For the topic of intervention on collective behavior of multi-agent systems, does r also affect the intervention performance? In this paper we study whether it is easier to change the convergent heading of the group by adding some speci...

Detecting Shill Bidding in Online English Auctions

The popularity of online auctioning has grown meteorically since the late 90s. This attraction is due to their convenience, low cost and ability to reach large (even worldwide) audiences. However, despite the advantages there are many problems inherent in auctioning online. One such problem is shill bidding where spurious bids are introduced into an auction to drive up the final price for the s...

Shilling Protection Using Network Topology Methods

This paper covers several methods of tackling the problem of shills on a network by trying to identify, filter, or mitigate their influence they have on the sign prediction of a network. We have covered several methods including the use of Collaborative Filtering, general vs personal PageRank, and Random Walks and have found that Random walks was the most resilient to shill attacks.
